At some point in your dog’s life it might be necessary that your dog receives a surgical procedure, may that be a scheduled one in form of neutering or something similar. To make the entire experience less stressful for your dog, there are a few things you can do in preparation for the surgery and for the post surgery recovery phase.
-Crate train your dog (your veterinarian will most likely order your dog to be on crate rest after the surgery -Take your dog out on leash for potty breaks (not every dog is comfortable with taking care of business on leash while a person is standing 6 feet behind them) -Get your dog comfortable with wearing an elizabethan collar aka cone of shame as well as eating and drinking while wearing the cone - Lots of mentally stimulating things that will keep your dog entertained while they are resting like stuffed Kong toys, food puzzles and chew snacks -Making sure your dog is comfortable with taking medications hidden in snacks (Pill pockets, Bil Jac, Wet dog food etc) -Teaching your dog to lay down on his/her side and holding still so you or the vet can inspect the incision site without any resistance from your dog -Being comfortable with wearing a muzzle if necessary Comments are closed.
